We wrote about this build back in April when the builder had out this bike up for sale. Turns out, it got bought and moved up to the San Francisco Bay Area. The new owner says that after 2 months, they are selling it to get back into cars, though the new Craigslist ad sort of intones that they weren’t prepared for the maintenance that any older bike like this would require—aka more than 0.
If you saw this line get away a few months back, now is your chance. The bike appears to have had about 800mi added to it, and is listed for $500 less than before. Our recommendation would be to negotiate hard, and come away with a cool bike. Below is our original post, which holds true except for the update on mileage.
This bobberey Cafe build by Upcycle Garage in Orange County, CA is based around a 1980 Yamaha XS1100. If you are looking for a considered and put-together example of that big-wheel cafe style—this might be your bike.
Seller states that it is tuned and runs flawlessly, with plenty of power to overtake on freeways. This Yamaha inline 4 produced 95hp when knew, and with a little tuning and some weight reduction, it can certainly power plenty of fun.
Closer inspection of the images shows a few extra modern goodies around the build, including some Motogadget bar-end turn signals that aren’t cheap (we know, we’ve put them on our own builds), lit tail-loop, custom brown seat with matching knurled grips, and a white-wrapped 4-into-1 shorty exhaust that we’d really like to hear.
We think the big-wheel looks right with the big-letter black-on-white Yamaha livery here, making the whole package more than your everyday Cafe. Yamaha USA seems to agree with us, as they’ve previously featured the bike on their Instagram. That, plus the probability that this could be a life-long California bike make it worth a second look, especially if you can get into that “OBO” price range.
Seller claims shy of 20k miles, and a clean title and registration (we assume its CA). Seller is asking $8500, which we’d bet is less than they have into it. For sale on Craigslist.
